Spotlight On Zeyurn

FGM Zeyurn - Survival Lead

"I frequently yell at my monitor regarding people who kill me via the very abilities/spells I've coded!"

Spotlight On Staff Home

Co-Worker's Not-So-Candid Quotes

"What can I say about the man who stole my title as the one who ruined the thief guild as we know it? Good job! Zeyurn's one of those people who makes complicated problems look simple once they've solved them, and who's always ready, with grace and style, to help others."

"Another wonderful part of our team - he's been very willing to pitch in and try to figure things out when folks have questions, which is a trait highly valued by those of us working the shifts who have been asking the questions!"

"Few staff members are fearsomely capable of writing messaging, code, AND running events. Doom!"

"Zeyurn is about the most reasonable and intelligent person you'll ever meet, which is actually very scary when you combine that with a whole lot of creativity and incredible ability to code just about anything."

"Zeyurn is best described as a brilliant, occasionally evil genius with just the right amount of insanity. He's cute, too. :D"

"The devious mind of the dynamic duo...he put his big heart in so many nooks of things, it is hard to find them all. He is there when you need help. All you have to do is ask."

"GM Zeyurn is wonderfully creative when it comes to keeping the wheels of Elanthian justice moving!"

"Zeyurn's work is a thing of beauty."

"Zeyurn in particular is always forthcoming with information when I've asked for it and willing to investigate a script I'm confused about."

"Keeps us on our toes with an offbeat, quirky sense of humor."

"I can't imagine a better "Z" to be confused with by the players. He has his hands in many of DR's systems, and all are the better for it."

"Zeyurn is amazing, he quietly moves about whatever project he is engaged in and makes certain it goes perfectly."

"Zeyurn knows GSL, and there's no system so complicated or big that it scares him from attempting to improve it."

"Zeyurn is something else. By that, I don't just mean he's extremely smart, helpful and skilled, but I'm pretty sure he's a robot. Or a ninja. Or both."

"A coding machine!"

Hi, I'm Karl Abel, perhaps better known these days as GM Zeyurn. I was accepted into the grand ranks of the DragonRealms code-slaves about three and a quarter years ago, and so far neither the bosses nor myself seem to have been regretting this! I'm somewhat of an omnibus GM, although my official title at the time of this Spotlight is FGM, Survival Lead. That means I head Rangers, Thieves, and the soon to be Necromancers. At the time of this Spotlight my current focus is on writing the Necromancer Guild as well as overhauling our Creature system, but I've written everything from Paladin spells to Bard enchantes to Thief khri, armadillos, and dirt. I also partake copiously in Events and frequently yell at my monitor regarding people who kill me via the very abilities/spells I've coded.

Where were you born?

I was born in Phoenix, Arizona.

Where do you currently live?

I currently live in Scottsdale, Arizona, proving the old adage that people don't like to move more than 50 miles from where they were born.

Do you have any pets/kids/both?

We have two adopted cats. One is named Hider, and the other Fox.

What is your current occupation?

Code slave / Computer Programmer

What did you want to be while you were growing up?

Computer programmer (I set the bar low). Additionally I wanted to program for / develop games.

Favorite TV shows?

I don't watch TV, but occasionally I'll pick up DVDs of older shows. So far my favorite would probably have to be Firefly. I watch The Daily Show and the Colbert Report online pretty rigorously though.

Favorite actors/actresses?

Um. This would presume I can remember any. Let's pick three I can name and like.. Ian McKellan, Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres.

Favorite musicians/bands?

Nightwish, Dream Theater, Sisters of Mercy, and more.

Favorite books/authors?

David Eddings (Elenium and Tamuli), Robert Jordan (Wheel of Time), Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman (Death Gate Cycle), Raymond Feist (Krondor series)

Where did you go to college and what did you study?

New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology: Studied Computer Science with a focus on Information Assurance

Favorite/least favorite job you've ever had?

I've only had one paying job beyond DR, so I guess it gets to be both. Said job is software engineer / cubicle slave at a big corporation.

Favorite hobbies?

DragonRealms (duh), freeform roleplaying, video gaming, reading, bocce ball in entirely unsuitable environments.

Favorite foods?

Tacos! Otherwise, almost anything italian.

Favorite board games or computer games?

Um.. this list could be long. I'll just say a few things that come to mind. Silent Hill 2, Wizardry 8, Jagged Alliance 2, The Witcher, KOTOR2, Deus Ex, Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth, and many more that I apologize for neglecting.

Favorite sports/sports teams?

None. I am the least sportsy person there is, or at least among the least.

What would you do with a million dollars?

Realistically? Probably just stuff most of it in savings/investments so I could retire early, twenty years down the road. A million dollars sadly isn't enough to do the really cool things like build a modern castle, which is what I'd do if I had a lot more than a million dollars.

What three people past or present would you invite to dinner?

Uh.. this is one of these questions that I never really think about so I'm drawing a blank. However I do think my dinners would have to be amusing/comedic, because there's not enough time to have serious conversations with the more science-y people. So I'll go with Stephen Colbert (the television personality, not the real person), Terry Foy, and John Oliver.

What is your favorite quote?

Argh, more 'Questions Karl never thinks about'. This quote doesn't describe me in any way, but I've always enjoyed it. "I am not a vegetarian because I love animals; I am a vegetarian because I hate plants."

Name something you'd like to do before you die.

Hmm. I think I'd like to have too many things on this list so I can never say 'Okay, I've done it. I'm now ready to die.' To be mildly serious, but only mildly, we'll go with the above thing which is 'build a modern day castle'.

What's your favorite acronym?

FUBAR. It's just funny to hear, and it's in my brain recently because of Left 4 Dead.

Who is your hero or heroine?

Maybe this is corny, but my mom. An excellent model of how to be a good parent in today's day and age, she always was there with support or a cattle prod, whichever was most useful, while still letting me grow for myself. Also, it's amazingly cool to have gamer parents.

If you could have any musical group or artist, past or present, play at your birthday party, who would it be?

Hmm. I'd have to go with Trans-Siberian Orchestra because I've always wanted to hear their Beethoven's Last Night thing live but they only ever come here to do the Christmas Special.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?

Well, if we're going to exclude being able to use magic (and thus having access to all _sorts_ of superpowers) since that would defeat having to choose, I think I'd have to go with the ability to completely accurately teleport (myself, others, and inanimate objects that aren't too large). I like going to visit people but I hate long drives / airports. It'd be amazingly useful and practical. Not to mention I could get paid big money to work in a variety of industries at that point.

And the Zobmondo question:

Would you rather...

Have a little man that lives in your mouth and incessantly hammers on your teeth with a miniature pickaxe...

Or...

coexist with a small bird that perches on your nose and yanks out your nose hairs at its discretion?

I actually think this is a pretty easy Zobmondo question. The answer is clearly that I should coexist with a small bird that perches on my nose and yanks out my nose hairs at its discretion. There are several reasons for this. The first is that 'at its discretion' is much better than 'incessantly'. The second is that there's an engineering solution to this problem! All I need to do is remove all my nose hairs first, before there's enough for the birdy to be interested, and I would then be okay! (Well, except for having a bird on my nose) Just requires some occasional maintenance. The third is that I don't want to lose all my teeth from the pickaxe.
