| What kind of mysteries are around? |
| Track down ruthless criminals! Locate a missing person! Or
shadow an elusive thief as she tries to unload her loot! There
are many different kinds of mysteries - some will be a snap
for a person of your undoubted abilities - and some will be
tricky. Brush up on your skills and see what's out there! |
| top |
| How do I get started on a case? |
|
The easiest way to get started on a case is to peruse the
bulletin and public notice boards around town. LOOK ON BOARD
to see what has been posted ... then READ <ITEM>. So
if you see a poster, a green notice, a red notice and a note,
you could READ GREEN NOTICE, or READ NOTE, etc. Start with
something that catches your interest.
Another way to get started is to listen to the calls for
help over the PBR communicators. The police dispatcher frequently
alerts listeners to criminals that are on the loose. As well,
people who are looking for assistance in 'certain situations'
also give a shout over the PBRs at times.
Be sure to remember the criminal's name and appearance. DESCRIBE
anyone you come across to see if they match the description.
|
| top |
| I've tracked down a missing person, now what? |
| Accuse the person by name and the authorities will come running
to bring them to justice. You'll receive a nice reward for your
efforts! |
| top |
| What rewards do I get for solving a case? |
| Cases are rewarded in two different ways. For each case you
solve for the first time you get an increase in your 'notoriety'
and some cash. Amount of awards are based on the difficulty
of the mystery. The finding of a missing person generally is
rewarded less money than a full-blown case, but those may be
solved repeatedly for cash. |
| top |
| I solved a case and didn't get a reward.
What gives? |
| Rewards for cases other than "missing persons" don't
usually pay cash for repeated solving. Depending on the case,
however, notoriety may be awarded. If this was the -first- time
you had worked on this particular case, please type ASSIST and
let the on-duty GameMaster know your situation. |

|
Where do I look for clues?
|
|
Clues can be anywhere. Be sure to SEARCH the area. LOOK ON
or LOOK IN things and listen very closely to what people say
about the case. Some clues will take the form of evidence
that you can sample, and some will be just what they appear
to be - nothing hidden. Take your time, and examine the scene
closely ... You never know what you might find!
|
| top |
| How do I obtain a sample? |
| Samples can be taken from some clues (not all clues will be
sample-able). The command to garner a sample is SAMPLE <ITEM>
WITH KIT. Let's say you have found a fingerprint and you wish
to get a copy of it to take to the Lab. You would first make
sure you are holding the appropriate kit and then type SAMPLE
FINGERPRINT WITH KIT. Your skills in various areas will determine
how successful you are at obtaining a -good- sample. |
| top |
| Where do I buy a kit? |
| Kits are available at Gizmogoria in the Emporium. Be sure
to READ CATALOGUE to see what kit best suits your purpose, as
there are several different kinds. |
| top |
| What do the different kits do? |
| Each kit has a specific function for sampling different mediums.
A dactylograph kit will not take samples from a botany exhibit.
Please READ CATALOGUE at Gizmogoria for a complete listing of
the kits and what each kit can be used for. |
| top |
| How long does a kit last? |
| Each kit is reusable but has a chance of breaking with each
use. If you are skillful enough, the kits could last a fair
amount of time. Just remember that wear and tear is expected
and nothing lasts forever. |
| top |
| What do I do with a sample now that I've
got it? |
| If you type INV (short for INVENTORY), you'll see that you
are holding your kit in one hand and a bag, tube or something
similar in your other hand. That "bag" contains your
sample. Take it to the University of Morada's Hawthorne Research
Facility located on the east side of the campus. Once in the
waiting room, READ SIGN and go from there. |
| top |
| How do I check on the status of my sample? |
| Go back to the waiting room and PUSH BELL. When the lab tech
comes, say STATUS. He'll let you know how long it will be (in
Moradian hours) before your analysis is ready. |
| top |
| How do I pick up the sample analysis when
it is ready? |
| When your sample's analysis is ready to be picked, up the
lab tech will give you an index number that corresponds with
the sample you left. Type BUY <#> to get it from the lab
tech. |
| top |
| How much does it cost to get the lab work
done? |
| Lab analysis and research generally run between $75 - $300
dollars. It depends on the type of work to be done. |
| top |
| What is an NPC? |
| NPC stands for Non-Player Character; in other words, a character
which is run by someone other than a player. Most of them are
run by the game's systems, but once in a while you'll come across
an NPC who looks and acts just like the rest of you! |
| top |
| Why won't this guy talk to me? |
| To speak with an NPC, type TALK <NPC NAME>. This will
signal to the NPC that you wish to have a "conversation"
with them. |
| top |
| Why doesn't this fellow understand anything
I say? |
|
There could be several reasons why an NPC won't respond to
your questions ... here are a few:
1. Make sure you have typed TALK <NPC NAME>. This lets
the character know that you want to have a "conversation."
2. Sometimes, if you have done an action between questions,
you need to type TALK <NPC NAME> again, as the action
has interrupted the processes.
3. If the NPC just gives you a blank look or doesn't understand
what you are saying it could be that they truly know nothing
about which you ask, or you need to rephrase your question.
Most of the NPCs around Cape Marassas are knowledgeable only
about the mysterious happenings that concern them. They won't
usually discuss the weather.
4. Make sure your punctuation, capitalization of words, and
spelling is correct. All these things can cause misunderstandings
for the NPC.
Keep your questions simple. The best format is usually "Tell
me about _________," or something like, "I read
your note." So, although "The body was stabbed several
times ... what do you know about it?" is colorful and
natural, a simple "Tell me about the murder." may
work best.
|
| top |
| How do I stop talking to this fellow? |
| Just type BYE at any time to end a conversation with an NPC. |
| top |
| What skills do I have? |
| To see what skills your character currently possesses, type
SKILL. |
| top |
| How do I get my skills to improve? |
| Skills improve automatically with use. Sampling with kits
improves the skill used for that kit, dancing improves your
dancing skill, combat improves the combat skills you're using
and so on. |
| top |
| How do I use the skills that I have? |
| Think of it like this ... you already know how to do certain
things and you don't have to think about how good you are at
it. Your knowledge and aptitude are there! As you do certain
tasks in Modus, your skills will be brought into play automatically.
All you have to do is have fun! |

| Where can I get a map? |
| Maps can be found in the Port Authority building in the Marina
District. They are kept in a mechanical dispenser. All you need
to type is GET MAP. |
| top |
| How do I read the map? |
| First, make sure you are holding your map by typing INV (short
for INVENTORY). As with most maps, there is printing on both
side of the paper. OPEN MAP to display the Downtown area, or
CLOSE MAP to display the New Marina district just south of Downtown.
To view the map, type LOOK MAP. |
| top |
| How do I find a specific person or address? |
|
The easiest way to find a citizen of Morada or the address
of a shop is to LOOK UP the name in a nearby telephone directory.
Several phone booths are located through out both the New
Marina and Downtown (one is outside of the Port Authority
building, another just north of the Palm Frond Pub). GO BOOTH,
and once there, type LOOK UP <WHATEVER>. For example,
if you needed to find the Silken Thread, you'd type LOOK UP
SILKEN, or perhaps LOOK UP SHOP. If you don't find an entry
the first time, think of other ways to describe the place
you are looking for. Many places are cross-referenced.
Once you have found the address, look up the street name
on your map. As you move from area to area, pay attention
to the street/area names at the top of the description. That
will help you navigate around town using your map.
|
| top |
| What address am I near? |
| To see the closest street address that you are near, simply
type ADDRESS. Remember, if the person or business is located
in an upper story of a building, you may need to look closer
at the description to see where it is. Looking for and reading
signs is usually a good place to start. Most businesses have
a marker of some sort outside of their premises. |
| top |
| Where is Cape Marassas? |
| Most likely you are IN Cape Marassas, the capital of Morada.
Most of the districts that are clustered around downtown fall
under the city's province. |
| top |
| What modes of transportation are there? |
| At the moment, modes of transportation include the public
monorail system, and your own two feet. Remember, the best way
to find out the lay of the land is to wander around and see
the sights! |

| How do the PBR Communicators work? |
|
PBR Communicators (PBRs, or comms for short) use a few simple
commands to make them run. TURN COMM will toggle your PBR
on and off. ACTIVATE COMM will turn the PBR on, while DEACTIVATE
COMM will turn it off. TURN and ACTIVATE/DEACTIVATE are interchangeable.
If you have one of the more advanced units and you wish to
change the channel that you are transmitting on, TUNE COMM
to <#> (0-16). Channel 0 is only for scanning and can
not be used for transmission.
To change batteries, first REMOVE COMM, then OPEN COMM and
REMOVE BATTERY. Once you have disposed of the old battery
and have purchased a new one, you can PUT BATTERY IN COMM,
and CLOSE COMM. When you are all done, WEAR COMM to use it
once again.
|
| top |
| How long do the PBR communicators last? |
| Each type battery has a different duration. The demo PBRs
that you received when you arrived on the island has a battery
that lasts for approx. 6 hours (real time). When the battery
in the demo model runs low, you will need to purchase a regular
model at Gizmogoria. The regular communication devices themselves
last indefinitely, though you may need to replace the batteries
from time to time. |
| top |
| Where can I buy a better PBR communicator? |
| Gizmogoria, in the Emporium, carries a full line of PBR units
as well as batteries for all budgets. Once you are at Gizmogoria,
READ CATALOGUE (page 2) for more information. |
| top |
