| What IS Modus Operandi? |
| Modus Operandi is a multi-player game set in a modern-day
setting, where you may explore the island, head off on adventures,
solve mysteries and make friends! Set against the exotic backdrop
of a small southern Caribbean island, this game combines the
finer nuances of British and American mystery/detection novels
with the all the action and adventure of exploring an untamed
land. You assume the role of a character of your own choosing,
and interact with others from all walks of life as you tackle
the local crime problems, explore the wilds, set out for a few
hours of intense deep-sea fishing, or just hit the bars, restaurants
and shops for a bit of relaxation. |
| top |
| Who created Modus Operandi? |
| Modus Operandi is the creative joint effort of Simutronics
Corporation, a leader in the production of on-line, multi-player
games; Time Warner Electronic Publishing, the multimedia division
of Warner Books and Little, Brown and Company; and The Mysterious
Press (an imprint of Warner Books), a premier publisher of mystery
fiction. |
| top |
| What do I do here? |
| Explore the island, solve crimes, fight the local crime, try
your hand at the arts, show off your fishing skills, dance the
night away or just hang out and chat with friends. The possibilities
are endless. |

| I'm here. Now what? |
|
That depends on what you want to do ... If you haven't yet
created a character, that's the first step. The game will
take you through the steps of generating a character.
If you have made it into the game, and are wondering what
to do next, there are several options. You have been entrusted
with something to be delivered, and you might follow through
on that. Or find your way to a bulletin board and read the
notices posted on it to see if there's a job you might be
interested in! Take a good explore around, get familiar with
the commands, and feel free to dive into the setting! You
might want to browse through the rest of these FAQ's, as they
contain a plethora of information that will help you along
your way. You may also wish to read our New Player Guide for
even more information about the game. Our mentors (a.k.a.
Island Guides) are available in game to help you settle into
island life once you arrive; just type DIR TIC for directions
to the Tourist Information Center. If you find yourself totally
stuck, type ASSIST and one of the on-duty GameMasters will
help you.

| What is the Character Manager? |
| The Character Manager (or CMgr) is the area of the game where
you build the character you wish to play. It's made up of a
series of questions that help determine your character's appearance,
age and so on. When you are done answering the questions, you
will be placed on the dock of the Customs-Port Authority Building,
just off the boat and ready to explore your world! |
| top |
| How do I create a character? |
| All you have to do is answer the questions in the Character
Manager. If this is your first time in Modus Operandi, the game
will take you right to the CMgr. Think about how you want your
character to look, their name and what age he or she is. All
you have to do is pick the answer that bests suits the character
you most want to play. |
| top |
| Do I pick a profession like in many other
role-playing games? |
| In Modus Operandi, everything is purely skill-based, including
your profession. When you're fresh off the boat, you'll have
no profession. As you gain skills, professions become available
to you. For example, learning a bit more about Earth Science
may give you the Gardener profession. These professions range
from silly, simple things like a Pizza Deliverer to Secret Agents,
Corporate CEO's and all sorts of things. The profession has
no bearing on how you play the game, it's just a preference
you can set and show off as part of your role-playing experience.
Once you've played a bit and brushed up your skills, use the
PROFESSION command to check out what is available to you. |

| I've created a character and I don't like
the way he turned out. How do I get rid of him? |
| If you'd like to start all over, just type REROLL CONFIRM.
Doing this will take you back to the Character Manager Menu
where you may retire your character. When you do this you start
from scratch and any possessions you have in your locker or
on your person will be lost. You'll be brand-new to the island
once again. |
| top |
| My name isn't exactly how I want it. How
do I change it? |
| Unfortunately, there is no easy way to fix an incorrect name.
The only thing to do is to start a new character with the name
the way you want it. Type REROLL CONFIRM, which will take you
to the Character Manager Menu where you may chose the option
to retire. Doing this will start your character all over, and
any notoriety, or possessions you have will be lost. |
| top |
| How do I start a whole new character? |
| To start anew, just type REROLL CONFIRM. This will take you
back into the Character Manager where you can select the option
to retire your existing character. |

| What commands are there? |
|
There are a whole battalion of commands, and far too many
to list here! But, there are some basic commands that you
should be familiar with. Some other game commands are listed
under the appropriate topic in these FAQ's.
LOOK [IN, ON, UNDER, BEHIND] <ITEM>. For instance,
you could LOOK UNDER BENCH, LOOK IN MY BAG, or simple LOOK
FLOWERPOT. Each will allow you to see what something looks
like, or to see if there is anything else to explore in the
immediate area.
READ <ITEM>. READ MENUBOARD, or READ POSTER, or READ
MY MAP.
INVENTORY, or INV for short. This will let you see what you
have on you in plain sight, including whatever you are holding
in each hand. Something to remember, though ... if you have
put an item in your coat, for example, you'll have to type
LOOK IN MY COAT to see what you have stashed in there.
JOIN <PERSON>. This command allows you to join that
person's group, and he or she effectively becomes the leader.
When he moves, you move. If you need to part ways, just type
LEAVE, and this will remove you from the group.
HOLD <PERSON> allows you to take the hand of the person
and draw them into your group. You are the leader, and when
you move so does anyone else in your party.
GET <ITEM>. This will allow you to pick up an item.
If you want to take something out of something else you may
have to type GET <ITEM> FROM <OTHER ITEM>. For
example say you have found a necklace in a box, you'd have
to type GET NECKLACE FROM BOX.
GIVE <ITEM> TO <PERSON>. Doing this allows you
to offer an item in your hands to another player. Let's say
you wanted to hand over a map to Josh. You'd type GIVE MAP
TO JOSH. He then could either ACCEPT your offer or DECLINE
it.
GO <WHATEVER>. If you wanted to enter a phone booth,
you'd type GO BOOTH, or if it's a shop entrance, you could
either type GO SHOP or GO ENTRANCE.
OPEN or CLOSE <ITEM>. This will let you make sure an
item is fully opened or closed.
Then there are commands like SIT, LIE, STAND, COUGH, WAVE,
SMILE, GRIMACE, LEAN, SNORT, LAUGH, GIGGLE, RAISE EYEBROW
... the list goes on and on. Feel free to try things out!
You may also want to read the partial list of verbs found
on the Modus Operandi website.
|
| top |
| How can I see who else is playing Modus Operandi? |
| Type WHO (WHO FULL) or STATUS to see who else is in the game
at the moment. This command also will show you if there is any
GameMaster on-duty. |
| top |
| How do I see what's around me? |
| Type LOOK. By itself, LOOK will show you what the area around
you seems like, who is in the immediate area and the most obvious
directions you can travel. Read the description carefully for
there may be other clues for places you can go or things to
be examined with in it. |
| top |
| How do I leave the game and save my character? |
| To leave Modus Operandi, simply type QUIT. This will log you
out of the game and save your character for you. So, when you
next visit Morada you can pick up right where you left off! |
| top |
| How can I see how well I'm doing? |
| Type INFO to see various aspects of your character. You can
also type TOPSCORE to see the top rankings for all the players
in Modus Operandi. NOTORIETY will show you how close you are
to obtaining a new level, and SKILLS will show you any skills
you possess. |
| top |
| How do you talk here? |
|
To speak, just type a quote mark " or an apostrophe
' in front of whatever it is you'd like to say. You don't
have to close the sentence with a quote mark, as the game
will take care of that for you. So if you wanted to say "Howdy,
all." you'd type 'Howdy, all.
The punctuation placed at the end of what is said will affect
how your character says it. A period will cause you to 'say'
something. A question mark will cause you to 'ask' something,
and an exclamation point will cause you to 'exclaim' something.
|
| top |
| How can I speak so that only one person in
a room can hear me? |
| You can't speak to only one person, but you can WHISPER. As
long as the person is in the same room with you, you can whisper
back and forth without anyone else in the room being the wiser.
The command is WHISPER <PERSON> <MESSAGE>. So if
you wanted to whisper something to Zakk Alwe about the weather,
you'd type WHISPER ZAKK ALWE SOME WEATHER WE ARE HAVING, EH?
You don't even need to use the quote in front of your message. |
| top |
| How can I talk to someone who's not in the
same area as I am? |
| There are two ways to talk over distances. The first is YELLing.
If you YELL <whatever it is you want to yell>, it will
be heard by everyone in all open, adjacent areas. The other
method is to use the PBR Communicators. These devices allow
you to send a message across long distances. |
| top |
| I don't want to talk to anyone, but a good
fight would be nice... how can I do that? |
| Character vs. Character (CvC) combat is only allowed in Modus
Operandi under special conditions. Specifically, during special
events, or if you are a member of a faction group such as the
Cape Marassas Police Department (CMPD) you may fight with rival
faction groups such as Chandler Ghent's Force. You'll have the
opportunity to learn more about these groups as you play the
game. Non-consented CvC fighting isn't allowed in Modus Operandi,
attacking a character that is not part of a rival faction group
will result in fines and arrests. |
| top |
| How do I get out of this room? |
|
First type LOOK. This will give you the description of the
area you are in, as well as letting you know who else is with
you and the most obvious directions you can move. For example:
The vaulted ceiling of the Customs-Port Authority building
arches high above you, its gilded paint reflecting the movement
of tourists and officials hurrying through the terminal. Brightly
painted murals depicting various scenes from Morada's political
and social history adorn the walls. As you gaze at the artwork,
a light ocean breeze blows through the gateway, cooling the
air inside the old structure and bringing welcome relief from
the muggy Caribbean heat. You also see an archway embossed
with a crest and a bulletin board with some stuff on it. Also
in the room: Kitty Hawke, Mamma Leone, Dervus Rothschild.
Obvious exits: south, east, west, out.
>From this description you see that you can go south,
east, west or out. To move in one of those directions, type
the first letter of the direction, or the direction itself...
W is the same as West.
|
| top |
| How do I get into buildings or go through
doors? |
|
To go into a place or building type GO <WHATEVER>.
Sometimes you have to read the area description closely to
see all that can be found. For example:
Slightly dingy but quite comfortable, this establishment
looks as if it has seen a good deal of use in its day. Activity
is centered around an information desk where the sweet smell
of gardenias clings, and several lost-looking people seem
to be getting answers to their multitudinous questions. Through
an archway comes the sound of conversation, and you see what
looks to be a common sitting room. You also see a beautiful
woven basket filled with brochures, an ornate sign, a newsstand
with a local newspaper on it, a dining room, a corridor, Mitzi
Marvoli and a bulletin board with some stuff on it.
Obvious exits: out.
In this area you are told that there is an archway, a corridor
and a dining room that may allow access to different parts
of the building. Try GO CORRIDOR, or GO ARCHWAY. Not all the
accesses will be plainly listed in the "You also see:"
section of the description. It really pays off to explore
your surroundings.

| How do I see what I have? |
To see what you have on your person currently, type INV (short
for INVENTORY).
If you have places items in your trousers pocket or your bag,
you need to type LOOK IN <ITEM> to see what has been stashed
inside. |
| top |
| Where can I buy new clothes? |
| Clothing can be purchased at a couple of different places.
The directories in the phone booths have a listing of various
shops that can be found around the city. Another option is to
see if anyone has any second hand items they wish to let go
of. It never hurts to ask! |
| top |
| How do you change clothes? |
| Type REMOVE <OLD ITEM> then either DROP that piece of
apparel, or PUT it somewhere else. Then GET <NEW ITEM>,
and WEAR <NEW ITEM>. So, if you wanted to change out of
your cardigan sweater, and wear a spiffy new trench coat, you'd
type REMOVE SWEATER, PUT SWEATER IN LOCKER, GET COAT, WEAR COAT,
and voila! |
| top |
| What types of shops are around? |
| There are many different types of businesses around Cape Marassas
- restaurants, clothiers, luggage, shoes and toys ... The best
thing is to either LOOK UP a specific type of business in the
telephone directory, or just browse around the city. You never
know what you will find! |
| top |
| I put something into one of my garments/purses,
now I can't find it. Why? |
| The first thing to do is type INV (for INVENTORY). If the
item isn't in your hand, they try LOOK IN MY <CLOTHING/BAG>
(whatever it is you are wearing or are putting things in). If
it's not in any of those places the chances are that it was
put IN an item that was on the ground, i.e. someone else's belonging.
At that point you can either go back and look, or inquire over
the PBRs if anyone else has found your item. To make doubly
sure items always go in something YOU own, always type MY in
the PUT sentence. For example: PUT HANDKERCHIEF IN MY HANDBAG.
The Modus Operandi staff cannot, unfortunately, replace items
that have been lost in this way. Another handy way to find items
is by using INVENTORY <ITEM> such as INVENTORY WATCH if
wanted to see any watches you were carrying. |
| top |
| Nothing else will fit in my bag... now what? |
| There is a capacity limit to all containers (usually limited
to weight). If the container you want to use is full, there
are a few things you can do. You may want to see if there is
something in there that you can live without and just leave
it behind. Or you could buy a larger tote, or store something
else in your locker. |
| top |
| How do I see what a store sells? |
| Most stores have a price list, menu or menuboard. You can
READ <WHATEVER>, or simply type MENU or STOCK. All three
of these will show you what is available at that particular
store. |
| top |
| How do I order something that I want? |
| When you have seen the list of what's available, look at the
item number next to the thing you wish to purchase. Then type
ORDER <#>. Usually the clerk or owner will place the item
into your hands, or on the sales counter for you to pick up.
Once in a while you might also see displays and stands with
things on them. You can LOOK at the item on the display to get
information about it and GET it to buy it. Please note! Sometimes
there are multiple items on the table (such as three different
types of purses for example), make sure you GET the right one!
LOOK at it first to make sure it's the right one. |
| top |
| How much money do I have? |
| Type CASH to see how much money you have on you at the moment.
You may have more wealth in your account in the bank. Go to
the downtown branch of the Atlantic Bank of Commerce, or any
ATM to find out. Just type BALANCE. |
| top |
| How can I make more money? |
| Picking up some extra cash is fairly easy around Cape Marassas.
You can stop by the Island Courier Service located in the Marina
District. They are always looking for a few trustworthy people
to deliver packages for them. Just READ SIGN when you get there.
Or if are looking for something more adventurous, you can help
out the local police by tracking down escaped criminals and
missing pets. READ the notices, posters and notes on the bulletin
board inside the Police Station to see who's at large! You'll
also come across criminals sometimes who may be cruising for
a fight. If you find one and can defeat them, you can SEARCH
them for cash and items. See the combat guide for more information
on fighting. Then, for the gamblers ... there is always the
casino where a bit of extra cash could be just a dice roll away. |
| top |
| How do the ATMs work? |
| The ATMs work the same way the Bank teller does ... type DEPOSIT
<AMOUNT>, WITHDRAW <AMOUNT>, or BALANCE to see what
you currently have in your account. |
