Races

Whether you want to be an ordinary human with the requisite two legs, two arms, two eyes, etc. or the noble centaur with the body of a horse and the torso of a man or even the mighty giant, towering over many of your peers by several feet, the choice is yours to make and it is one you will have to live with for the rest of that character's life. Unless you anger Artemis, a human isn't going to suddenly sprout hooves. If you don't want to worry about what to do with your tail then you might as well give up on being a centaur. Banging your head on low-hanging eaves not an option? Giants aren't for you. We'll go into more detail in this section on what makes these races what they are and a little history behind them each.

Choosing a race might be a bigger decision than it first may seem. What race you choose will really define how you role-play. A centaur, for example, doesn't have any feet so talking about your feet might earn you a few stares. Centaurs have hooves, not feet. Giants are large, so doing things like crawling under a table in an action shouldn't be something you do as easily as just crawling beneath it... unless it's a giant-sized table you're liable to upset it and knock things off. These are the kinds of things we want to keep in mind about the race of our character to enhance our role-play and really breathe life into them.

Some verbs will have special handling for the different races, some might even work only for that one race. SWISH will let a centaur swish their tail, but it is all but useless for anyone else. SASHAY would allow a human or giant to sashay about the room while it would cause a centaur to canter. Different things in your environment will also react differently. A chair suitable for a human may not be suitable for any other race, a tree may or may not be accessible to a centaur due to the need to climb it, a swinging vine might not hold the weight of a giant.

There are also items, usually clothing, that is restricted to the different races as well. Humans and giants can wear pants while centaurs may not. Centaurs can wear caparisons while humans and giants may not. You may have a special shield that is just too heavy for anyone but a giant to wear. Or it could be an item only a certain race can use. If you had a shoe horn that helped you put on your shoes, don't expect to be able to use it as a centaur...you'd be better off with a forge for that.

Keep these restrictions in mind when you choose your race. It can be hard to live as a centaur or a giant in a human's world, but there are definitely places for you where a human might feel just as out of place. Now, let's learn more about the different races.
