| Learning to Control Your Character |
The first thing you should do when you arrive is learn to control your character.
Start trying out commands, and learn to make your character do things.
Don't worry too much about getting lost, you are probably already lost
anyway, and you can't get any more lost. Relax, and try out some commands.
Try walking around, but try to stay inside the city of Athens where
you first appear. Try talking, even if there is no one else in the
room to talk to. Try some different commands, like lay, stand, jump,
wave, smile, etc., just to see what they do. Don't try out just those
five either. Be creative, and see how many different commands you can
identify in ten or fifteen minutes.
The best thing to do is just to find a quiet place without many
people and just go crazy. If you think you may want to do it, type
it and you're liable to be able to. Want to cackle? Type it and
see what happens. Want to dance? Go for it. Think you know
what the POSE verb does? Think again... some verbs, like
pose, will do different things depending on your position. Try posing
while kneeling, sitting, and lying down as well as standing. Think
you've mastered grinning? Nuh uh! Try grinning at yourself,
type GRIN <your name> and see what happens. Several
verbs will do different things when targeted at yourself. Got the
SIGH verb down pat? Probably not, some verbs allow adverbs
to make them even more meaningful. Try to SIGH SCARED,
or ANGRY, or SLEEPY, or MEEK... and that's
not even half of the options for that one verb alone.
Explore the town, get to know how to interact with your environment.
Go into shops and browse the merchandise with the MENU
and ORDER commands. Type SET MONSTERBOLD if using
eScape or the Wizard and watch out for NPCs (Non-player Characters)
highlighted in yellow. Try to interact with them. Ask them things.
Want to ask Vania how life is going? ASK VANIA ABOUT LIFE
and see what she says. Play with the stray animals, pet the kittens
and scratch the dogs. There are all sorts of things you can do.
Type DIR EMPLOYMENT and get a job to earn some dinars.
It'll also help you learn to use the DIR command and portals
and how to get around town. You'll also learn how to interact with
NPCs. Want to give some laurels to a priest? Type GIVE
LAURELS TO PRIEST.
Just keep your etiquette in mind when running wild around town and learning
new things. Some people will understand that you are new and excited and
just trying to get hang of things, but others won't be so forgiving... whether
it be because they're just mean or because the role-play someone who takes no
guff.
When you feel like you are able to make your character walk around and
communicate, you are ready to go on... but the learning never stops.
You'll find something new all the time.
